BOW NS

Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) is a non-profit, educational program offering hands-on workshops to adult women. We encourage a supportive environment conducive to learning, making friends, and having fun. No experience is necessary.

We offer a variety of hands on, entry level educational workshops for participants in each of three areas: hunting (shooting), fishing, and other outdoor activities.

Originally started in the US in 1991, Nova Scotia began offering the program to women in 1997. BOW NS is a volunteer led organization.

This workshop is for you if…

  •  you have never tried these activities, but have hoped for an opportunity to learn,
  •  you are a beginner who hopes to improve your skills,
  •  you know how to do some of these activities, but would like to try some new ones,
  •  you are looking for the camaraderie of like-minded individuals.

Most activities will take place outside and may involve a wide range of physical activity including bending, standing, carrying light weights (pack), arm movement (paddling), and walking (all classes) distances of up to 0.5 to 2 km through wooded areas.

All of our instructors, both female and male, are volunteers who give freely of their time and knowledge, many who have been with the BOW program since it began, and represent some of Nova Scotia’s best outdoor leaders.

All classes are offered at an introductory level for those who have little or no experience. All equipment is provided. Space is limited. Register early for best selection of courses.

Register through  https://www.eventbrite.ca/  – search for Becoming an Outdoors Woman Nova Scotia.  To avoid disappointment, be sure you register early, as classes fill up quickly.

BOW participants will attend four 3 1/2 hour pre-selected courses of their choice, beginning Friday afternoon and ending Sunday morning.  The workshops have a short inside instructional portion before heading outside.  We ensure that all participants enjoy a safe, positive, fun and educational experience and are taught in a ‘hands-on’’ way.

The BOW weekend is an all-inclusive package; accommodation, meals, four hands-on courses. BOW workshops are generally held at camps, in an ‘outdoorsy’ atmosphere. Participants will stay in shared accommodations – lodges, dormitories or cabins that may be rustic, but have modern basic amenities.  Participants are asked to bring their own bedding or sleeping bag/pillow and towels.

Nutritious meals are provided and cooked by the camp staff.
